The City of Naperville seeks Plans Examiner who conducts comprehensive architectural and construction plan reviews for all types of residential and commercial buildings and structures; ensures that plans submitted are in compliance with adopted building codes and ordinances; coordinates review comments with other reviewers; and provides code requirement information to the general public, contractors and licensed architects and engineers.

• Reviews plans and specifications to ensure compliance with municipal codes and ordinances for all types of construction, including single family, multi-family and commercial structures. Maintains accurate records of plan review and actions taken.
• Conducts field inspections of buildings and structures before, during and after construction as assigned. 
• Attends public meetings with developers, engineers, architects and contractors to resolve permit issues as well as check permit documents and architectural plans for completion.
• Reviews submitted mechanical, electrical, HVAC and plumbing plans for residential and commercial buildings and ascertains whether they conform to applicable code requirements; advises applicants of needed changes and suggests means of changing plans for compliance. 
• Provides assistance to the Building Review Board and other boards and commissions, as required. 
• Responds to building code requirements and plan review inquiries and complaints as required. 
• Prepares reports, memorandums, letters, and other forms of correspondence. 
• Maintains handouts, drawings and outlines explaining construction regulations. 
• Recommends and drafts building and related code changes for all construction types found in the City of Naperville.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Credentials and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a related field.   
• Three years of progressive responsibility and experience in preparing and/or reviewing construction plans and building specifications.   
• ICC Plans Examiner Certification.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted.

Valid State of Illinois Driver’s License. 

Preferred Credentials and Experience

• ICC Master Code Professional certification.
• ICC Residential Plans Examiner certification.
• ICC Electrical Plans Examiner, Mechanical Plans Examiner, Plumbing Plans Examiner and/or Accessibility Inspector.  
• Expertise in structural, mechanical or electrical disciplines.
• Experience working in BlueBeam or a similar plan review software. 
• Experience working in Tyler EPL (EnerGov) or a similar permit processing software.
