The City of Cambridge is seeking a Commissioner of the Inspectional Services Department (ISD) to provide strategic leadership of the City’s enforcement program related to the Massachusetts State Building Code, the City Zoning Ordinance, and portions of the State Sanitary Code. Over 80% of greenhouse gas emissions in Cambridge comes from buildings. The Commissioner of ISD plays a key role developing and implementing policies for development that are aimed to promote energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for and adapt to the effects of climate change, and support best practices for overall environmental performance. ISD is identified as a Key Partner in the City’s Net Zero Action Plan Update and ensures implementation of the Massachusetts Stretch Energy Code.
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field. Equivalent education and training may be substituted. 7 years of experience in developing or examining plans with knowledge of the Cambridge Zoning Ordinance, Mass State Building code and other related codes. Certification by the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) as a Certified Building Official (CBO) upon hire or within 12 months of employment. Extensive understanding and demonstrated experience with sustainable design, construction, and operations.
