“Architectural Designer/Drafter” sought by Marcus Gleysteen Architects (“MGa”), headquartered at 129 Kingston Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02111. This would also be the main, permanent location out of which the role will be based long-term. Position is a full-time, permanent, immediately available, job opportunity that does not require any local travel (as the “Architectural Designer/Drafter” does not do any site work at active construction sites of MGa). Must live in the City of Boston, MA, or within a reasonable, daily commuting distance thereof (e.g., areas contemplated can include the City of Cambridge, the larger Greater Boston region, or Massachusetts’ MetroWest, North or South Shore communities). While regularized telecommuting (i.e., working remotely from home) historically was not permitted pre-pandemic, we, like many United States businesses, had to relax this in 2020-21 due to COVID-19. A short-term, telecommuting benefit consequently was made available to all. In 2021-22 though, upon conditions normalizing and when we fully can resume using Marcus Gleysteen Architects office-space in Boston in full number, this telecommuting benefit then will cease and no longer be available. Resources, like this, from that point forward, they will be expected to be in the office full-time and five days weekly, returning to a more traditional model. Job description follows.
“Architectural Designer/Drafter” provides assistance throughout the building design process, including preparation of design and construction documents, presentation materials, schematic design, design development and contract documents, model building, renderings and construction administration activities under routine guidance. Resource assists in all phases of residential projects. Role is responsible for design and concept development for competitions requiring expedited concept development and document production. Must translate complex design concepts into computer models using two- and three-dimensional, visualization software, including Sketch-Up, InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, AutoCad and Revit. Other duties and responsibilities: integrate building systems with design concepts and produce technical documents for analysis of budgets and conformance with construction cost models, using metric and imperial standards; integrate projects into urban context, responsive to prevailing regulatory, environmental and economic conditions; and research new materials and design and construction practices that support energy conservation and sustainability for international and domestic projects.
This position, to be clear and rightly disclaim, it does not require professional licensure, notably an architectural license to be specific. In brief, the “Architectural Designer/Drafter” is an unlicensed occupation within the broader field of professional architecture. Role works for and under the auspices of a licensed architect at MGa who supervises the individual daily and under whose license the work proceeds. Position of “Architectural Designer/Drafter” itself, to be clear, it is not a supervisory capacity either. The "Architectural Designer/Drafter”, for and at Marcus Gleysteen Architects, it does not have subordinate, direct reports. Position is a hands-on, individual contributor, responsible for architectural design and architectural drafting, reporting to and supervised by a licensed architect of MGa again. Role, in short, to disclaim, it does not manage other personnel.
Requires a Bachelor of Architecture Degree or foreign equivalent in architecture itself, or in urban design, urban planning, or in a related architectural discipline (specifically excluding though landscape architecture and/or interior design). Also required are two years of architectural drafting and design experience translating architectural design concepts into computer models for conceptual design, design development, and construction documentation, and specifically using InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, and Revit. The two years otherwise required (and specified here) must also include one year of experience using Sketch-Up and AutoCad (this may have been obtained concurrently, i.e., in the course of securing the broader two years needed).
Applicants should send resumes directly to the employer. Can send to Marcus Gleysteen Architects by email to hr@mgaarchitects.com. Resumes will be reviewed promptly.
