The New Business & Product Development department focuses on the developing and maintaining relationships through AIA’s commercially focused committees and partners. The Director, AEC Industry Development & Liaison will support the development of products, services and business opportunities that further AIA’s position in the architecture, engineering and construction industries as well as generate non-dues revenue.
Working with AIA’s commercial business partners and one or more groups of volunteers, the director utilizes skills in stakeholder management, organization and coordination to manage and assess the work of the AIA Documents Committee, AIA Risk Management Committee and MasterSpec Review Committees; including, when needed, supporting new AIA initiatives with these key business partners.
This role will work closely with the AIA Documents Committee, Risk Management Committee and the MasterSpec Review committees, staff leadership and the leadership of the commercial partners to ensure successful business relationships and that the plan for the development and future content of documents, member products and services, specifications and other work products meets the standards as set forth by the AIA. Travel will be required to attend committee and other meetings outside of the DC area.
Writing, editing, coordinating and presenting including, but not limited to, the following:
Design and develop strategic industry partnership and committee engagement program that identifies and cultivates corporate commitment with members, industry leaders in a portfolio of relationships spanning co-development endeavors, and potential corporate development opportunities
Collaboration with corporate partnerships, marketing, and analytics functions, maintaining strategic awareness of key market conditions and dynamics, competition, voice of the customer, and innovation trends.
Engage externally with commercial partners to both represent AIA’s strategy and to assess new trends that can inform strategic priorities.
Define and manage success milestones and metrics, working with business development, and other teams to drive success.
Drive partners, committees and internal teams to alignment, escalate issues to senior management, own management of issue resolution, and recommend new and improved processes for delivery of solutions.
Deliver regular detailed performance reporting to partners.
Strategize the deployment of other industry relationships that deepens the capacity of the organization to drive committee advancement and action.
Educate the staff on new and existing industry and commercial partnerships.
Coordinate events & meetings with partners that directly contribute to the committees’ work.
Oversee the solicitation and incorporate feedback from stakeholders on committee issues to ensure that product development policies and procedures meet their needs.
Recommend changes to improve the effectiveness of committee based on program results, member feedback, and changes in requirements.
Attend meetings, participate in conference calls, and represent the AIA at industry meetings and other legal and professional associations.

KSAs; Training and Experience:
Demonstrated ability to track and nurture relationships with committee members, business partners and volunteers.
Contract law experience and knowledge of the contracts used in the design and construction industry a must.
Building specifications, building information modeling and knowledge of Specs and BIM used in the design and construction industry strongly preferred.
Experience with a mid-size to large design or construction entity or owner, preferred.
Skill in the use of Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, and Zoom
Strong attention to detail. Skill in organizing and prioritizing tasks
Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree (ex. MBA, M.ARCH, JD) preferred with a minimum seven years of relevant experience in Architecture, Engineering, Design, Construction Management, Project Management. Post pandemic, this position will be required to travel 20-30% of the time.
