The Corporate Real Estate team is composed of Planning and Development (formally called Design and Construction) and Airport Affairs. These two teams work together to secure lease spaces and manage all major construction and renovation projects at our hubs, stations and city locations across the world.
Job overview and responsibilities
The Director – Design and Innovation, Corporate Real Estate will manage staff responsible for delivering design and advancing innovation within the realm of planning, design, and construction for commercial, airport, and non-airport projects. Director will be responsible for inspiring an environment of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship and for developing and implementing long-term strategies, including growth and optimization, sustainable and process improvement measures. The leader in this role will collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders and United Executive Leadership to identify, lead, manage, and implement small and large-scale initiatives in-line with achieving our vision and strategic objectives.
Director will confirm design and innovation projects are completed in compliance with all United’s needs as well as the following: airport operational needs, corporate guidelines, corporate goals and strategies, jurisdictional codes, design intent for aesthetics and durability, airport lease requirements, other agreements, obligations and regulations to which the airline is bound. This includes leading teams in the completion of feasibility studies, return on investment analysis, programming, cost estimating, master planning, conceptual and detail design, interior fit out, workplace studies, and execution of enabling and infrastructure related modification projects to confirm they are completed on time, on budget, and within quality and safety standards.
Portfolio Planning, Development, Delivery, and Management
Establish and maintain strong business relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Manage the current state of ongoing or planned projects to develop masterplans, programs or capital improvement plans that benefit the long success of United.
Provide input on airline or commercial impacts and collaborate on modifications to the planning, design, construction and/or operations of facilities to satisfy the airline’s interests.
Responsible for the coordination of all stakeholders and scope definition and decisions for programs, as well as communication to United’s, Landlord’s, and Airport’s Executive Leadership
Manages team to plan, design and execute airport and commercial property facility and infrastructure construction projects.
Lead and participate in design and innovation focused discussions with the A/E, Contractor, and UAL stakeholders
Manage feasibility, development, programming, planning, design, construction, schedule and budget related issues that pose challenges to the success of the program by drawing on knowledge of the planning, design, construction and airport operations or commercial operations experience.
Accountable for the compliance with defined metrics, budget, schedule and scope of the projects per the approved business case requirements including benefits realized.
Ensure governance and auditing of the PMLC (UA and CRE), artifacts, and guidelines.
Use and ensure utilization of CRE Project tools such as Plan Plus, SharePoint, Microsoft Project, Oracle and others as defined by need.
Responsible and accountable for transparent, accurate, consistent program reporting (weekly, monthly and quarterly) to appropriate level of governance and audiences.Leadership skills, knowledge, and/or abilities:

7+ year in any of the following: Interior Design, Architecture, Engineering, Commercial Real Estate development
10+ years as Project Lead over multiple stakeholders and consultants
Proven capability to innovate and influence change
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to learn quickly and adapt accordingly as projects continually shift and evolve
Ability to build strong internal and external business relationships
Knowledgeable in architecture and engineering techniques
Understand best practices in design, materials, and construction methodologies
Experience leading design focused discussions with the A/E and UAL stakeholders
Experience leading stakeholder groups, design teams, project management and construction management teams
Must be skilled in the areas of: Presentation and executive presence, communication, analytics, leadership, negotiation, decision-making, conflict management, and relationship-building
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to learn new software.
Technical knowledge related to digital tools and processes.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat Pro, CMS platforms and online collaborative tools.
MS Project or similar project management software.
Approximately 25% domestic travel, occasional international travel required
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
15+ year in any of the following: Interior Design, Architecture, Engineering, Commercial Real Estate development

FAA, ICAO, IATA standards, guidelines and requirements that relate to planning and design of airport infrastructure and facilities
RA, NCIDQ, LEED, PE
