The Design Lab for K-12 Education at North Carolina State University (NCSU) embodies the College of Design's longstanding commitment to K-12 design education and outreach. The assertion that design is a skill of everyday life and learning about design as a way of thinking helps students apply skills in math, science, technology, reading, writing, and communication are central to the Design Lab mission. The Design Lab's primary areas of activity and focus include pre-college programs, K-12 design education curriculum and pedagogy development, and extension and outreach through mobile programs, teacher training, and school initiatives for education through design.
The Design Lab is currently developing innovative, year-round pre-college programs for students in grades 6-12 that address skill-building, creative problem solving, and self-efficacy, including Design Camp in the summer and after school courses for high school students in the Design Lab during the school year. The Design Lab offers outreach programs free of charge during the school year. It also hosts school groups in elementary, middle and high schools from around the state providing pop-up hands-on programs to engage students who are touring the College of Design through the Office of Student Affairs. The Design Lab provides Educator Development training to ensure the competency and confidence of all part-time temporary staff members, the awareness and use of best educational practices, and the delivery of the highest-quality design education experiences possible.
The Coordinator of Pre-College Programs is responsible for the implementation of design education programs that further the programmatic mission of the Design Lab for K-12 Education and academic mission of the College of Design at NC State University.
This position is responsible for short- and long-term management of Design Lab pre-college programming (research, project development, implementation, evaluation and reporting results). This position will initiate and maintain working relationships with College of Design faculty, administration and students to develop and participate in Design Lab programs. In addition, this position is a point of contact for parents, students, individuals, businesses, institutions and art and design practitioners throughout the region to connect with the College and University through the Design Lab. This position is responsible for qualifying content, facilitators and resources to ensure the programmatic mission of the Design Lab and the academic mission of the College of Design are supported.
