This is a professional managerial position in the Advocacy + Relationships team, responsible for directing programs related to codes and standards development and advocacy of those initiatives. The Senior Director is responsible for creating and implementing a multi-year strategic plan for AIA involvement in all relevant aspects of building industry codes and standards development and adoption. The incumbent directs and participates in the development of research and materials for use by AIA components, AIA members and industry stakeholders, including but not limited to: policy resources and toolkits; development of proposed changes to laws, regulations and building codes; and other policy resources for direct delivery to AIA members, components and policymakers. Additional responsibilities include: representing AIA in coalitions and industry groups related to codes and standards development; manage a team of staff and consultants to ensure a constant engagement in activity relevant to codes and standards development and adoption; and working collaboratively with other AIA teams to promote AIA policies. The Senior Director reports to the Senior Vice-President of Advocacy & Relationships. Job Duties: · Provides oversight and engagement as an AIA staff point of contact on Codes and Standards and other areas of practice including building science and commissioning, as they relate to the development of codes, standards and other regulations (in concert with policy development). · Responsible for directing the development and implementation of annual programming, data capture, and management of all AIA member engagement in AIA codes and standards related activities, and liaises with other relevant AIA member groups related to policy, codes and standards, and building science. · Serves as a primary liaison between the AIA Codes and Standards Committee and AIA member and component groups and external industry groups. · Serves as the AIA representative and liaison to codes and standards development organizations. · Directs communications activities with AIA components and groups as it relates to codes and standards. Proactively engages with AIA components regarding their activities related to codes and standards adoption and related issues, aligning outreach to them with efforts of other key AIA initiatives. · Leads on the negotiation and successful adoption of codes and standards on AIA priorities with appropriate policymakers. · Directs the development of marketing plans, communications, and program delivery systems; works with the AIA Brand & Strategic Marketing department to integrate the AIA brand throughout all codes and standards related activities and promotes media coverage at all levels of engagement. · Provides policy research and data on a wide range of subjects related to codes and code adoption building science and sustainability to the AIA Advocacy & Relations Team, & to AIA members and components. · Frequently works with and responds to volunteer leaders and members (task forces, advisory groups and working groups). · Develops and implements a multi-year strategic plan and annual budget for codes and standards programming. · Collaborates with other AIA teams and constituencies. · Other projects as assigned. Significant experience managing multiple priorities and responsibilities independently, and superior ability to prioritize and delegate work in a fast-paced environment is necessary for success in this position. Must be able to provide long term strategic direction and technical guidance of the program to maximize AIA’s position within codes and standards development. Must be able to demonstrate statesmanship – the ability to engage in the diplomatic negotiation of AIA policy priorities. Candidate must have experience or demonstrated ability to conduct the necessary research on a variety of platforms to support policy proposals and decision making. Flexibility and high energy are a must. Experience working independently and using initiative and independent judgment to direct complex projects on or before deadlines. Superior organizational skills, skills in identifying and developing opportunities for outreach to member groups and the ability to multi-task and manage multiple duties simultaneously. Demonstrated experience writing marketing materials, reports, manuals, articles and other correspondence. Demonstrated experience analyzing complex subjects quickly, researching and providing logical presentations both orally and in writing to a wide range of audiences. An understanding of codes and standards, zoning and other land use regulations, emergency management, building assessment, disaster assistance and the built environment are preferred.
Graduate degree (preferred) in Architecture, Building Science Engineering, Public Policy, or related field and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience desired. Supervisory Requirements:
