The City of Cambridge, Department of Public Works (DPW), is seeking an Assistant Project Manager with 6 to 8 years of experience in Construction and/or Architecture to perform design review and construction oversight of deferred maintenance, alteration, and photovoltaic projects. This position supports a capital program tasked with altering the City’s diverse building portfolio to achieve sustainable, low maintenance, high-performance facilities. Projects across multiple buildings vary in scope and complexity, and range in size from $150K to $25 million.
The DPW contracts with consultants for design services and is responsible for ensuring that each project meets the City’s quality and operations standards, while supporting long term sustainable building performance goals. Projects are located throughout the City within a portfolio of 41 buildings totaling 1.1 million sq. ft. Many buildings are historically significant, and most are occupied requiring a high degree of coordination and care during construction. Building types include public safety, youth and senior centers, office buildings, libraries, garages, and public works.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Participate in milestone project team review meetings with design consultants.
Review design construction documents at project milestones and prior to construction procurement.
Perform Clerk of Works duties at active construction sites ensuring work is completed successfully as specified.
Perform OPM and/or Owner’s Representative duties at construction project team meetings, supporting an integrated project team approach.
Coordinate and support departmental operations in occupied buildings throughout construction.
Coordinate projects with DPW, Public Safety or Library in-house facilities teams, ensuring adherence to City standards.
Demonstrate flexibility in managing a variety of responsibilities. Responsibilities will vary by project.
May perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in construction project management, architecture, or related field.
6-8 years of experience with demonstrated success in Architectural or Construction Project Management; experience in alterations to existing and historic buildings desirable.
Demonstrated understanding of deferred maintenance projects across multiple building types for envelope upgrades, accessibility, fire and life safety, HVAC, and/or plumbing.
Experience in all phases of construction, project closeout, and occupancy.
Demonstrated experience in review of construction documents, project schedules, and estimates.
Demonstrated understanding of architectural and engineering detailing, and systems.
Experience in interior office space planning and alterations desirable.
Interest in sustainable design and net zero energy/emissions.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Interpersonal skills to professionally represent the City of Cambridge.
Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
Attention to detail.
Experience with public sector projects.
LEED Green Associate or LEED AP in Building Design and Construction credential.
Understanding of Commonwealth of Massachusetts public procurement laws MGL Ch. 149, 149A, and 25A.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or BIM.
RATE: $88,563 – 105,088/year plus excellent benefits
